What are some of the ways you can protect yourself from coronavirus? Diet, Sleep and Exercise. First, optimize your current health. Be sure that you are eating well, sleeping well, and exercising every day.
Vitamin D. In addition, find out your vitamin D level. If your level is low, you will definitely benefit from supplements to improve it.
Hand Hygiene. Hand hygiene is very important but be sure to do this correctly. Use soap and water or alcohol hand gels for a minimum of twenty seconds and be sure to cover all surfaces (back, front, between fingers and around the thumb). Wipe surfaces that are frequently touched at home (phones, handles, doorknobs, et cetera).
Cough Hygiene. Cough hygiene refers to covering you mouth when you cough. Even if masked, tucking your mouth into your inner elbow when coughing will help reduce the spread of germs.
Social Distancing. Social distancing refers to remaining greater than six feet (2 meters) from another individual. Do not attend events with friends or family when you are sick.
Temperature Screening. Take your temperature, a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius is associated with viral or bacterial illness and you should isolate yourself and seek medical attention.
Masking. Masks were previously traditionally used when exposed within six feet of someone with suspected contagious illness for at least two minutes. The best protection is paper disposable masks. N95 masks and surgical masks are equivalent, except that N95 conform better to the face and allow less leaking in from the sides. For outdoor and public use, the CDC is recommending cloth masks. Each mask should be used for two hours or less and then disinfected. UV light (sunlight) or other cleaning methods can be found on the CDC website.
PPE. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes an N95 face mask, disposable eye shield, disposable impermeable gown, and disposable gloves. This is reserved for healthcare workers taking care of infected patients while hospitalized. However, if you are caring for a loved one who is sick and at home, you may want to take similar precautions with materials you can reuse and disinfect.
